O

ne of the Library's most charismatic leaders was Charles Fletcher Lummis, a former Los Angeles Times City Editor and founder of the Southwest Museum who served as City Librarian from 1905 to 1910. During his tenure, Mr. Lummis oversaw development of the Library's collection of important California and Southwestern titles, an irreplaceable record of the state's past. He was so concerned about theft of these volumes he constructed a branding iron that enabled him to brand the legend "L.A. Public Library" on the upper edges of each book. While some considered the act barbaric, there is no record of any book with that brand ever disappearing from the library.
